affiliation: Preachers/Torchwood
sexuality: Heterosexual
species: Human
marital status: single
member title: Leader/Freelance Operative
playby: Noel Clarke
cannon or original: Cannon
hometown: London, England Powell Estate
current residence: Cardiff
parents: Jackson Smith (Father), Julia Smith (Mother, deceased), Rita-Anne (Grandmother, deceased)
siblings: none
brief history: Jackson left shortly after Mickey’s 2nd birthday, leaving Julia to raise him. For the next few years, Julia faltered in raising the young boy, leaving him more and more with his blind grandmother Rita-anne. Before Mickey’s 5th birthday, he was living with his grandmother fulltime. He stopped asking about his mother after a while and she never returned to remind him. Rita-Anne was no-nonsense and kind but stern, Mickey’s sense of right and wrong, his sense of loyalty can be attributed to his grandmother’s guidance and his father and mothers pointed absence in his life.
While in school, he found he had a greater than average understanding of how computers worked and how to manipulate them. By the time he had finished school, Mickey was an expert computer hacker. He had taken a vocational course in auto mechanics and at 16, got a job with Farris Bros. Autos as a junior mechanic. He moved into the Powell council estate as to not be a burden to his grandmother, but close enough to where he could visit on a daily basis. It was in the council estate that he first met Rose Tyler, who would be his friend and then his girlfriend. He never pushed his luck with Rose, knowing that he would certainly lose her one day; she was bound for greater things.
Once the Doctor arrived, everything changed. Mickey found himself a prisoner of the Nestene Consciousness and though he was freed, he was overcome by the knowledge that alien life exists. That moment of cowardice and his jealousy pushed Mickey to change. Over time, waiting for the blue box to show, for Rose to come home, he steeled himself for that change. Every time Rose came home, he would crumble in his resolve. His relationship with the Doctor improved as he came to accept him as the man Rose loved and not the alien that had stolen her away. Though Mickey still felt inadequate under the shadow of the Doctor, he tried to make his existence count by helping Rose and the Doctor by hacking into the military missile system and launching them at 10 Downing street, and by protecting Roses mother, Jackie, while Rose was away.
He became almost obsessed with tracking alien sightings, it was during one investigation he knew he had to do something, so Mickey alerted the Doctor and Rose of a possible alien sighting at a comprehensive school. During the investigation they met with Sarah Jane, a former companion of the Doctors. Mickey would go through another crisis of worth, when he mistakenly compares himself to the robotic dog, K-9 that Sarah Jane reveals. Mickey rallies however and saves the day by running Sarah Janes car through the school doors and unplugging the computers, allowing the children of the school to flee. Mickey, empowered by his decision to act, to make a difference, asked to join the Doctor and Rose in their travels.
When they arrived in a parallel universe on another earth, Mickey finds that he is mistaken for “Ricky Smith”, the leader of a human resistance group called the Preachers. Once the main force of the cybermen and its leadership are destroyed, Mickey tells Rose and the Doctor that he is staying here to take the now dead Ricky’s place, to care for his grandmother, who is alive here and to continue the Preachers fight and destroy the other cybermen factories. It was a hard decision, but Mickey knew that he and Rose were never going to be and that she had finally found her “greater thing” to which she was always bound.
It was two years of fighting the cybermen, of destroying every factory they could find. Finally, after destroying a cybermen factory in Paris, the cyber men mysteriously disappeared almost entirely. Pete Tyler had used his considerable wealth and influence to rebuild Torchwood and using the tech developed there, created devices to jump into Mickeys home dimension. Mickey volunteered to jump ahead and scout the cybermen. Once he jumped he found himself in a fully functional Torchwood insitute, he quickly assumed the identity of Samuel Chase, a laboratory assistant, using his hacking skills to make the identity legitimate. He wasn’t there long before he ran into Rose again, who had tried to use psychic paper on a trained torchwood scientist and was captured. Mickeys job was to watch for the cyber men to appear, then alert his people from the other universe.
The cyber men did appear, and the Preachers/Torchwood used jump devices to enter the dimension to help the Doctor in defending the world. Mickey was prepared for cyber men, but not the daleks who were waiting in the void ship inside Torchwood. The four daleks, or Cult of Skaro kept Mickey and Rose captive, until the cyber men and daleks began fighting each other. They escaped the daleks, but not before Mickey was shoved into the prison ship that the daleks had been trying to open and needed someone to touch the casing who had absorbed artron energy, which Mickey had. The casing now activated, the daleks moved the casing out into the main warehouse of Torchwood, opening the ceiling to raise the casing into the sky, fighting the cyber men and torchwood all the while.
The Doctor had a plan, to open the void and suck all of the cyber men and the millions of daleks now escaping the opened casing which was bigger on the inside. But as they had all been through the void to get here, the Preachers, Pete, Jackie, Rose and Mickey had to leave for the other universe to avoid being sucked in. Rose refused, but the doctor put a medallion on her and activated it at the same time everyone else did. They all appeared in the alt. Torchwood building, but Rose hit her device again taking her back. The others couldn’t keep jumping, as each time they used the devices it potentially would destroy both universes. After arguing with Jackie and Mickey, Peter jumped back and just in time caught Rose who was being pulled into the void and jumped her back to his dimension. The void closed up behind her and the dimensions were sealed, the devices would no longer work.
The weeks after, Rose would talk about dreams she was having, the darkness was coming. Mickey knew enough to not dismiss her dreams out of hand, Jackie and Pete took a bit of convincing. Over the next few years, Pete moved scientists from his other companies into research and development. Mickey was tasked with intel and design, eventually leading the research team. It took two years, but eventually they were able to create Control. A central automated director that controlled the jump devices even across the barrier between universes, and allowed for communication. The first jump device was loaded into the Control system for testing. That night, Rose stole it and an anti-dalek weapon then left for primary earth. Pete and Jackie were livid, Mickey was laughing.
When they asked why he was laughing, he said “What do you think all this was for? We built it for her, we built it so she could escape back to the doctor. She just didn’t want to wait for us to finish the other devices. She was afraid, and I can count the number of times I’ve seen that on one hand.” Mickey then pulled a jump device from his pocket. “That is why I didn’t give you the other one we finished, in case she destroyed it out of some misplaced sense of nobility.” Placing the device in his pocket, Mickey continued, “I’m going back, I’ll help Rose if I can, but I am going back because there is nothing left here for me. You are like my family, but I have to find my own way, my own fight.”
Mickey gathered his things and a few weapons, put them in a backpack and activated the device.

strengths: Mickey is an expert in all things digital, there isn't a twentieth or twenty first century computer system that he can't build, maintain, or hack. With his alt. Torchwood training, he knows alien tech as well. He is trained in firearms, terrestrial and non. He is athletic and has fair endurance. He is fiercely loyal to friends and family. He is a good leader when it is warranted. He has clocked over two years of field operative time with Torchwood and the Preachers.
weaknesses:He gets jealous if there is someone to rival him for the affections of someone he cares for, and tends to sulk. Rose (she is able to get him into all sorts of trouble). He can be short sighted of large picture events, tending to focus on what is in front of him. He will procrastinate if given the chance.
secrets: In his heart of hearts, he is glad that the earth is in peril from aliens, he has purpose now, something he can truly do. He has a destiny as vivid and strong as Roses. Also, he idolizes the Doctor.
fears:Never finding someone who will love him as much as Rose loves the Doctor. That he will always be seen as that council estate kid, no matter what he has done.
habits: Sarcastic quips, humor to deflect painful or uncomfortable subjects.
overall personality:Quietly brilliant, snarky and sometimes flippant, Mickey has become a bit jaded by his experiences in the alt universe. He is loyal to a fault, ready to take a bullet to prove that he is the kind of man to be counted upon. He is casual and ready with a joke, even when situations demand otherwise, in an effort to show calm and nonchalance, something he picked up from the Doctor. Initially skittish around aliens, Mickey has grown in his acceptance of non-terrestrials. His guard is often up around those he doesn’t know or if it is a species he isn’t familiar with. He still has inferiority issues, but it isn‘t as acute as it once was. While he is uncomfortable with homosexuality, he makes a special effort not to let that show, because he really adores Jack, loves his cavalier attitude and his bravery.

“Oi!” Mickey jumped back from the ice cold water and onto the sandy beach. The device had brought him back, but he had travelled all the way to a beach in Norway to a weak point in the dimensional wall. It had been low tide when he used the device, not so here, the water was up to his knees.
Shouldering his backpack, Mickey began walking back the way he had come in the alternate world. The plants were younger here, they were only up to his ankles, the walk was much easier to the road. Once he made the road, it took almost two hours to get a ride. When he arrived in Bergen, Norway, he purchased a ticket for a flight to London and three hours later he was hailing a mini to take him to the Powell estate.
The ride was a long one and the driver was a chatty sort. Mickey kept silent for the most part, his mind on other things. The mini pulled up to his flat and he paid the driver for his troubles. The mini pulled away and Mickey was still standing there, the backpack leaning against his leg.
“The place has forgotten me. What was I thinkin’ coming back here? There’s no one, not Rose, Jackie.” Mickey sighed, then picked up his backpack and started for his flat.
“Wait, it’s not my flat anymore, been gone five years at least. Where the hell am I supposed to find Rose when there’s no Jackie to come home for?” Mickey stopped and threw down the backpack and sat upon it. “Suppose I should find out where the Doctor is, find him and I find her.”
Mickey walked to an O2 outlet and purchased a blackberry mobile, then called the number that Martha Jones had given him. It rang a few times and then Martha’s voice answered, “Hello?”
“Martha, it’s Mickey.. Mickey Smith” Mickey waited, hoping that she didn’t think that this was a joke.
“Is it really you? What’s gone wrong?” Her voice was terse, Mickey couldn’t blame her.
“Nothing’s gone wrong, I came back using a one-shot device developed by torchwood. I’ve come back to stay, and I promised Jackie I would find Rose for her.” Mickey waited, and was relieved when he heard Marthas voice relax.
“I am glad to hear from you, but I did expect something had gone terribly wrong. Sorry. I can tell you that we had reports that the Doctor was in Cardiff. Perhaps you can find him there. I will try to find out more information for you if I can. This is your number then?” Martha asked in a casual manner.
“Uh, yeah, this is my number, just got it. What is the Doctor doing in Cardiff? Do you know if Rose is with him?” Mickey asked in rapid succession.
“Slow down, mate, I only know the Doctor was reported as seen there and I would assume he was visiting Jack at Torchwood 3, which is based in Cardiff. Look I’ll send you coordinates to your mobile, the base is hidden under… well I’ll contact Jack and send word that you are headed that way, they can meet you.” Martha sounded hesitant.
“There’s a Torchwood in Cardiff? And Jack is in charge? Jack stayed in one place?” Mickeys voice died away as he sensed Martha’s unease. “Look, I don’t want you giving away confidences, Martha. Contact Jack that will be fine. I would appreciate it if he could meet with me. Thank you, Martha, you have been a lot of help. I will make my way to Cardiff.” Mickey hung up and put the phone in one of his tactical vest pockets under his long leather jacket.
Opening the backpack, Mickey checked that his devices and weapons were enduring the travel well and then zipped them back up. He walked to a Landrover dealership and paid, in cash, for a used Freelander TD4. He drove away after only half an hour, it would be the quickest sale that lot had ever witnessed.
Mickey pulled into a petrol station and filled the tank, then pulled around to the back. He then got out and pulled the backpack out with him, opening the boot and distributing the weapons and devices in any hiding place he could find, finally putting his Walther P99 .40 cal in its holster under his arm. He then got back into the vehicle and drove for Cardiff.
