[ Well, can't let the Doctor take all the glory from me! Gotta get my two-cents in! The story is thus-far unfinished, not because I don't know where I'm going... but just because I don't know where it is going to go, but just because I don't know... uh, well, my muse left me. XD ]
In the dark, comforting abyss of sleep, a voice floated up to him.
“Dad.”
The voice was faint, he strained all his power to make it louder. But the voice danced just out of range, “Louder,” he whispered into the dead silence of the vortex. Nothing came back at him from the loud silence.
Just as he was about to give up, he heard it again.
“Dad, find me Dad. I’m scared.”
His mouth worked, but no sound came out. He strained against the silence, screaming out silently as he did so. Suddenly the abyss because a torrent of motion and chaos. Thrust back and forth violently.
“Doctor! Wake up you lazy hooligan!” a shrill voice scream directly into his ear. With a yelp he launched himself to his feet and stared into the stern green eyes of Donna Noble. He blinked several times, momentarily disoriented by the sudden change of scenery.
“Jenny?” he asked drowsily, he ran a hand over his face, stimulating the skin and waking himself up more. “No, Donna.” He looked at the redhead and offered her a smile, “Donna!” He chirped happily while getting to his feet.
Donna’s face was blank and she didn’t speak for a moment, “Jenny?” she asked directly. The Doctor turned to look at the TARDIS ship board. He smiled affectionately, still trying to ease his pounding hearts.
“You said Jenny,” Donna state bluntly again, not letting him off the hook.
The Doctor grimaced, “Yeah well… I guess I did. Funny that is.” His hearts pounded uncomfortably in his chest. He tried to direct Donna’s attention away by distracting her with a trip to the ruby beaches of Cairo (the planet, not the earth location), but she was having none of it.
“Did you dream about Jenny?” She pressed.
He awkwardly walked to the other side of his ship and fiddled around with something unimportant. He was recalling his dream, “She called to me. To get her.” His hand slammed down on the controls in a sudden burst of anger. “I can’t. She’s dead.” His face was hidden in shadows as he struggled not to let his feelings overwhelm him.
“Are you sure she’s dead? She was a Time Lord like you after all.” Donna asked, sitting down on a seat.
“She didn’t regenerate, she wasn’t … she wasn’t enough like me,” he said in anguish. He paused, letting the sting of loosing his daughter pass before he forced himself to brighten once more. “So! The ruby beaches of Cairo, sounds brilliant, doesn’t it? Shall we go?” he asked, hoping she wouldn’t press the topic of his daughter any more.
Donna got the hint. She nodded her head faintly and laughed, “Rubies it is. I remember the trouble you had with the sapphires.” She said, still sitting down on the bench. Her white hands were folded in a way that would have been elegant, except for the fact it was Donna. So instead she just looked normal.
The Doctor smiled at her and flipped a switch rather dramatically. The ship lurched, nearly bucking Donna off her couch. She called out, glowering angrily at the Doctor, he grinned playfully, acting like the giddy little child he was. She sighed and was glad when the ship finally came to a crashing halt. “Will you ever get the hang of driving this thing?” she snapped at him as her organs re-arranged themselves.
“Possibly,” he said brightly, running over to the door and throwing it wide open. He turned before looking out the door and opened his arms dramatically wide, “Behold! Cairro – the planet, not the place. A land of glittering gold and thirst red rubies!” He looked expectantly at Donna who was staring out the window.
“More like the planet of the homeless in shades of gray with beggars on every street corner,” she said, getting up and looking with shock outside.
“What?” The Doctor turned around and looked behind him. “Well, that’s not right. I’m sure we’re in the right place…” with a dissatisfied sound he sprinted over to the main console of his ship and pulled the rotating screen around to look at it.
“Well, that changes things,” he said, turning the screen towards Donna, “We’re not even in the right part of the galaxy.” He turned the screen back towards himself and smacked it a few times in irritation.
Donna rolled her eyes, she could barely read that screen and just the brief flash provided no insight on how the thing actually worked. With a sigh she walked back over to the Doctor and looked over his shoulder at the comprehensible-only-to-Time-Lords screen. “So where does it say we are?” she asked as nonchalantly as she could.
He looked over his shoulder at her with laughing intense brown eyes, “I haven’t the faintest,” he said merrily, bounding towards one of the numerous yellow pillars and grabbing his long trademark brown coat. With a flourish he put it on and grinned at her. “Shall we go and have a look?” He reached his hand out to her.
Donna couldn’t help smiling, she grabbed his hand and appeared to be thinking as they walked towards the TaRDiS doors, “Let’s see, you haven’t any idea where we’re going, I still can’t understand that monitor and you’re overly excited,” she looked down at her watch, “Must be Saturday.”
“I like Saturdays,” The Doctor protested, opening the double doors of his police box and stepping briskly onto the new world. He looked about with eager, “Always filled with action Saturdays are.”
