Jack was out wandering the streets of Cardiff. He was actually doing rather mundane things that Ianto would normally do for him but he had actually wanted to go do them himself. He dropped off his drycleaning and was picking up his watch from the jeweller. He should just break down and buy a newer watch but he loved the old wind-up. It was a classic, much like himself. Unfortunately, in his line of work, the old girl needed to be brought in for cleaning. He always felt naked when she was gone. Same as his Vortex Manipulator, but he wouldn’t send that to a jeweller.
He paused outside a little bistro, the smells were tantalizing and it dawned on him that he hadn’t eaten anything that day. The waitress was one he had met before as he liked taking Ianto here. Their outdoor café was pleasant and Jack loved to people watch.
“Hello beautiful, can I have a club sandwich to go? Oh and a large sweet iced tea,” he asked the pretty red-head. She was an older woman who had definitely been gorgeous in her youth as she still held onto it, firmly.
She smiled and nodded. “Sure, Jack. No Ianto with you today?”
Jack shrugged. “He let me out on my own. I guess he thinks I‘m a big boy now.
She eyed him appraisingly. “I should think so. I’ll have that sandwich out for you inna tic. Why don’t you sit and wait. That young lady over there was asking about you.”
Jack glanced over and smiled approvingly. “She was, huh?” The young girl didn’t look like anyone that he should be concerned with and normally he would have ignored the situation but he was having a good day so far, no sense ruining it with carelessness. People asking questions about him, innocuous or not, usually brought up a red flag.
He glided over to the young girls table and said, “Is this seat taken? Seems real busy today and I’m just waiting on my to go.” He flashed her his golden smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. He held out a hand and said, “Captain Jack Harkness, and you are?”

Lana looked up again and the man was standing there."No the seat isn't taken. And I'm Lana Lockwood. Why are you so known here. I mean I'm not from Cardiff. I'm here on vacation. and thinking about moving here."She said as she took his hand and shakes his hand. She could tell he was flirting a little bit. But not many people would do it around her.

Jack smiled and took a seat. “Me? Known around here? Nah, I’m just a local boy and I like the food here. Nan, the waitress, she’s rather motherly,” Jack said, catching the older waitress’ eye and winking at her, she blushed.
He turned his attention back to Lana. “Where are you moving here from?” He leaned into his chair, appraising the young woman. She was definitely fit and Jack did like them pretty.

"I'm from Manchester."
Jack smiled. “Nice place, Manchester. Used to know a DI there named Sam Tyler. His DCI and I weren’t cozy, though,” he said, remembering his time there during the 70’s. “Gene Hunt, what a bastard,” he whispered as her mobile rang.
"If you don't mind I have to answer it. It's my sister she and I are close."
Jack lifted his hands, palm up to say, ‘be my guest’. He listened to the one side of the conversation. Seemed like domestics if you asked him and he hated getting involved in other people’s domestics.
His eyes followed her movement as she stood and paid her tab.
"I have to go home. I'm sorry for cutting it short." She said walking away.
Jack only raised his eyebrows out of mild interest. He could see in her eyes that something was wrong. It wasn‘t that Jack Harkness did not have a heart. It was more that he surely couldn’t go on a road-trip to Manchester to find out that her ex was roughing up her sister. Some things were even beyond Torchwood. If it was still the 70’s he would have just given Sam a call to check it out. Unfortunately, he no longer had ties to that place. He had only been drawn there because of the man. Sam was a man out of his time and Jack was called in to investigate. Jack could never shake the feeling that Sam reminded him of someone. Either way, that was a long time ago and Sam and Gene were long gone.
Gwen’s voice in the back of his head whispered to him to at least attempt to do something. Damn her and her huge bloody heart. It was beginning to rub off on him. “Hey,” called Jack. Pulling out his wallet Jack removed a small card. “If you need help, give me a ring.” He was now standing, holding the card out toward her.

Lana turned around when she heard Jack's voice. "How would you help." She said looking at the ground thinking about the men that tried to grab her a few days ago. She wondered if they had her family. A small tear rolled down her cheek to her jaw line. "I need to go before they kill my family." She said truning away in tears.
