and just, on principle, know everything Liz smiled back at him. She had a feeling she was going to like this one. He seemed nice enough anyway. Not a serial killer at all. But before she could respond, he continued on. "No one seems very interested in giving me any information." she said with a thoughtful frown. "It all seems very top secret. Or under the rug." Soon they came to a large round door. Well, where ever they were, they had a bloody good security system, she could tell that much. Secret doors, key pads. Her curiousity was itching to know what was going on, and what this Institute was exactly. It was temporarily sated as she walked through the round door, and she felt her mouth drop in amazement at the massive room laid out infront of her. She looked up, and could barely see the roof it was that high. Though she could have sworn she saw something move up there. There were no windows, and had it been any smaller it may have been dingy, but as it was, if felt more like walking into a football field. It was well lit, with lots of metal and stone, desks littered across the floor and a large complicated mechagnism in the centre. "Defenitley excel at the different." said Liz with a half amused, half amazed laugh. "How far are we under Cardiff? There weren't that many stairs. And am I going to find out what all this is for yet?"

He grinned when she smiled back at him. She seemed like someone that the Hub needed, cheerful and smart. With a slight pang he remembered Toshiko, he wondered for a minute if she was going to replace her. He mentally shook his head, no, she’d said medic. She was Owen’s replacement. Looking at her as she spoke to him, he smiled, “And here I thought we were the worst kept secret in all of Cardiff,” he chuckled softly. He looked at the door as it opened for them.
As they walked through the door, he smiled at her bewilderment. With a grin he looked about his clean Hub in joy. Above them he heard Myfanwy stretching its wings in the upper levels. He smiled happily and looked towards Jack’s office. Was Jack around? Hardly a time when he wasn’t, and since Gwen had gone off with Rhys for the week, he knew she wasn’t here. Maybe they were alone.
Ianto looked at her and smiled, “Well, hard to say exactly, but I would imagine about four storyes.” He told her, he looked around the Hub, “Jack? Are you here, Jack?” Ianto called, his voice echoing faintly off the walls all around them. He looked at her and smiled charmingly, “You are, but in the mean time, can I interest you in some coffee or tea?” Ianto asked, he knew that Jack – if he was here – would want some for himself.

And here I thought we were the worst kept secret in all of Cardiff,”
"Well that would explain it." said Liz with an easy smile. "I've only been in Cardiff for a month or so."
And she'd stay here if her parents didn't find her. It seemed a nice place. Of course, it wasn't like she was scared of her parents. She just wanted a little room to breath. She wasn't hiding. Well, she told herself that. It was ust easier to break contact, rather than fight them. Of course, they still thought she was who she'd been before she left. Although Liz had the feeling that she would turn back into that meek little girl if she was forced back under their thumb. Anyone would.
As Ianto called out for someone named Jack, she wondered who it was, but sumised that it was the boss he had been talking about earlier. Maybe then she would be told something. The whole experience was turning out to be quite interesting, in the very least. Sure beat hanging around the apartment sending yet another resume out.
You are, but in the mean time, can I interest you in some coffee or tea?
She shook her head. "I'm not much of a caffeine fan, but that's anyway." She'd never really drank coffee, or tea for that matter. Had just never 'gone' for it. She'd always ben asked how she studied without a coffee hit while she'd been at college.

Jack perked at the sound of his name, echoing on the Hub's concrete walls. One of his favorites; Ianto's voice. He smiled to himself and kicked his feet off his desk, speed-walking to the entrance to the hub from his office. He adjusted his red braces, still grinning broadly. Ianto had sounded, surprisingly, happy. That was a good sign for Jackie-boy. Ianto had been a little... off... since Owen and Tosh--
But Jack didn't want to think about that either. Point was, Ianto sounded happy over something. And if Ianto was happy, then he was happy. At least, if what Ianto was happy about meant that something good was happening. Sometimes, Ianto laughed about the strangest things. Things like the world changing places, ending up in an entirely different universe. There was a time and place for everything.
He skipped down the small set of stairs that led from his office into the Hub, still displaying a broad grin. "Well hello Ianto and hello gorgeous." His eyes widened at the stunning blonde standing with Ianto, a small, confused smile on her face. He had come up just in time to hear her say something about refusing Ianto's beverage offer. The self-proclaimed Captain made a "tsking" noise. “Oh, you don’t want to refuse Ianto’s service. He makes the absolute best coffee. I’m serious. It’s orgasmic.” He moved closer to the pair, putting his hands on his hips. “You rang?” He directed at Ianto sarcastically, his shocking blue eyes smiling. But his attention quickly snapped to the bombshell blonde standing next to his partner.
Jack Harkness couldn’t resist the ladies. Or the men. But the women always fell for his charm faster than the men, it seemed. Not that the men didn’t—look at Ianto, or John Hart, or even the original Jack Harkness—they were examples of Jack’s 51st-century flirtatious charm. Or the pheromones. Those were important too. He flashed a smile at the blonde. “Sorry. Didn’t catch your name. Captain Jack Harkness. And… why exactly are you in my house?” He held his hand out for the girl to shake, but his question was more so directed at Ianto. After all, he did know everything. [/blockquote]

Elizabeth looked around as a man bounded energetically down a small set of stairs and approached them. So this was the 'boss'. He wasn't a bad looking one to be working for, she had to admit. The smile was catching. The rest of him wasn't bad either, come to think of it. No, she'd not had much experience with men, but she could tell a flirt when she saw one. Didn't make it bad though...
Sorry. Didn’t catch your name. Captain Jack Harkness.
Captain then? She wondered what of. "Elizabeth Wright. But please, anything but Elizabeth and it's fine." she cursed her mother yet again for the long name. She should just get it legally changed to Liz and she'd be fine. Make her parents spew. Another bonus in that at least.
And… why exactly are you in my house?
Liz took the offered hand with another smile. "I was told there was a job on offer for a doctor. And if you don't mind me saying-" she looked around the cavernous room again."-you have a very different taste in housing to most other people."

Ianto smiled indulgently as he looked at Liz. She hadn’t been here that long, still smiling he looked around the Hub, it was a very organized chaos – chords everywhere, it looked sort of like a building half-completed with wiring everywhere but where it was supposed to be. He sighed mentally and studied the new girl slowly, she looked sort of evasive, like she was hiding from something. He put the matter from his mind and returned his attention to the finding of Jack.
He tuttered softly when she commented on her ‘caffeine’, he was about to tell her that he could make her something along the lines of hot chocolate instead when heard the sound of Jack approaching them. His head perked up and his eyes brightened, he straightened the tie on his suit subtly and looked to see Jack skipping down the stairs towards them. He nodded his head at Jack when he offered greeting. Instead of stepping in and introducing Liz, he moved off to the side to start on preparing Jack a cup of coffee. “It’s fine Jack,” Ianto said, much more interested in the reaction that Liz would have over their charismatic leader – and HIS boyfriend. Ianto merely lifted an eyebrow at Jack’s comment and turned to the machine.
Ianto didn’t turn his back as Jack started to ask questions of Ms. Wright. He sighed, rolled his eyes and walked back over to Jack, holding out a steamy cup of coffee. He sipped at his own and smiled comfortingly at Liz. He quickly looked at Jack when the blonde explained her reason for being there. He sipped at his coffee slowly, trying not to burn his tongue or his throat – he’d done that several times. It still hurt, each and every time he did it.
“Jack,” Ianto said softly to the Captain, “Canary Warf sent her.” Ianto looked over to see Jack's expression. A while back Jack had 'severed' all ties with the other institutions. So it was curious that they would send someone over to their institute in spite of Jack's prejudice against them. All in all, it was a usual day in Torchwod, Ianto sipped at his steaming drink and looked pleasantly at Liz.

Jack’s smile lifted in his chest when he saw Ianto move to the side to prepare him a cup of coffee. He was too good for him sometimes, the way he took care of Jack. It wasn’t just with coffee either, it was also with the cleaning, the errands, the shopping, the… other favors…Jack shook himself out of his thoughts, a small smile growing on the corner of his lips. Out of his peripheral vision he watched his partner work the machine skillfully; Jack silently wondered how the hell he got it to work. Every time he tried to make a cup of joe he broke it. And that had happened on more than one occasion, Ianto could validate that.
He took the mug from Ianto with a small ‘thank you’ (mostly silent, since he’d thank Ianto later when there wasn’t a blonde to be embarrassed around) and turned back to Liz as she talked. She seemed like a nice girl; smart, too. He laughed lightly, the sound a mix between a soft squawk and the tinkle of glass, when she mentioned the Hub’s interior design. “Well Lizzie, they say a person’s house reflects the character.” He flashed a smile, placing the hand Liz had shaken back on his hip. “And doctor, huh? You’re kind of young to be a doctor. Tell me Lizzie, have you ever shot a gun?” He took a gulp of his coffee and sucked in a puff of air—he had burned his tongue. Again. Quickly, so no one noticed, he let his face drop back to serenity, smiling as he turned his tongue over and over in his mouth, trying to make the pain go away. Sure, it would heal pretty fast, but that didn’t mean it wasn't going to hurt like hell.
His face instantly dropped with Ianto’s mention of Canary Wharf. He hadn’t heard, no, scratch that, he didn’t want to think about that. Ianto should have known not to mention that around him, no matter if Liz was a part of it. He came from there; he knew what it was like for them. For all of Torchwood. And even the mention of it had made him sick. He cast a glaring eye at Ianto over the lip of his mug, breathing through his nose so the steam rose into his face. “Really?” He said tightly to the sharply-dressed man, his bright blue eyes narrow. “Interesting.” His tone wasn’t really a warning, (as if he would do anything to Ianto) it was more of a “I’m pissed at those words” face. Well, he was also pissed that they would send Liz. If they had even sent Liz. She could be lying. People had lied about knowing about Canary Wharf before, after all.
"Why did Torchwood One send you here, exactly?" he asked, his eyes still narrow. He didn't like the way they ran things there; if she was from London, then why would she be sent here, of all places? [/blockquote]

You’re kind of young to be a doctor
Liz raised an eyebrow. It was suprising, even annoying. No, definitley annoying, how many people said this. They assumed that because she was young, she couldn't have made it through her courses. They were wrong of course. "Put my head down and worked. I finished High school in accelled classes, so I could go straight onto to college ahead of others, and a year earlier. " She knew she was a nerd, well, at least, people saw her that way. She was a bit. She'd never really had a choice in the matter though. "I don't have much field experience, but I graduated top of my year. " Tell me Lizzie, have you ever shot a gun?
Liz frowned. Shot a gun? Why did he need to know that? "No...." she said hesitantly. "It's not something they generally teach in medical school. The aim there is more to save lives. Why do you ask?" She felt her curiousity itching again, and it only got worse as Ianto mention Canary Wharf again and Jack's expression turned to what could be mildly described as hatred. What was this Canary Wharf place? It seemed they were more than just the associate or job agency that she'd assumed. There was an obvious distaste towards them around here.
Why did Torchwood One send you here, exactly?
Liz shrugged. She wasn't exactly sure herself. "I suppose they got hold of my resume. I sent out nough of them, and it's entirely possible that they got hold of one. But they said even less than you have. " That last sentence had a slight bit to it. She couldn't help it- were they going to leave her in the dark forever? She didn't care if it was a yes or no or I'm sorry get out, but she hated to be left in the dark.

Ianto nodded his head pleasantly as he looked at his boss with affectionate eyes. He sipped at his own drink and started to take a particular interest in the screen next to him. He rolled his eyes when he heard the soft gasping sounds from Jack’s mouth. The man must’ve swallowed the coffee hot again, which was something he did about every day. Ianto sighed and clicked at some buttons, idly checking the Rift energy. There had been a spike lately at about this time and Ianto was determined to get the correct reading from it since it always seemed to be messed up.
He looked at Jack as the male rebuked him. Ianto flinched, he knew Canary Wharf was a no-no, but he’d felt that Jack should know. His shoulders tensed and he resumed looking at the screen. He knew better than must what had happened at Canary Wharf –he’d been intimately involved in the situation. With a pang and a sad expression on his face he thought about Lisa and what had happened because of her. He let out a shaky sigh and sipped at his coffee delicately. He looked at Liz, he raised an eyebrow at her claim of intelligence, he didn’t think even Owen was that dedicated to his job.
He frowned sadly, little experience would be rectified soon enough. It was a high bar that said you were going to get hurt on the job. Ianto’s eyes flicked over to Toshiko’s computer, he bit his lip sadly. He chuckled softly at her comment and nearly finished his mug of coffee. He looked at Jack, trying to gauge what the man was thinking. Clearly Liz didn’t know what was going on here, or what went down. He could imagine the glee Jack would have robbing her of her innocence. Perhaps he’d better step in and prevent that.
After all, he was actually starting to LIKE Liz. With a smooth smile he re-joined them, “Perhaps someone explained what really goes down under here.” He said with a hopeful smile, his attention turned to Jack and he pleaded with his eyes to be allowed to show her around.

He noticed Ianto's look, one of hopefulness. His eyes narrowed. That man knew his weaknesses like Jack knew where Ianto's diary was. Sure, he was Ianto Jones, he knew everything, but still.
Jack ran through a possible conversation between the two in his head, trying to play out what would happen if he resisted...
Ianto, you don't have to, i'll do it. Don't you have more important things to do? Don't you have paperwork? Nah, that can wait. This is SO much more important. And fun. But Jack- you ALWAYS do it. Let someone else do it once in a while. Jack chuckled to himself. Heh. He said do it. We totally should. No, Ianto.... Just this once? No. I'm the team leader. You're the eye-I mean, coffee-boy. What was that? -death glare- What do you think was in your coffee, Jack? Uh... coffee...? Just keep thinking that, Jack. Just keep thinking that. "Fine. Liz-" He directed his voice to her as he turned around, annoyed with his own thoughts and wanting to just relax in his office. So be it if Ianto wanted to hang out with.... Liz and not him. He could find more important things to do. What had Thought-Ianto said...? He had paperwork? "Ianto will show you around the hub, explain the details, show you your workspace... and all that jazz." He waved his hand rather flamboyantly at the two and spun on his heel, walking away with a flourish. Jack smiled to himself as a song popped into his head. He whistled the tune as he hopped back up the stairs, dancing to the music in his head. Show her where to park her girdle, oh, her mother's blood'd curdle, If she'd hear her baby's queer, And all that jazz...He stopped for a moment on the landing, thinking. His mom would probably do the opposite of that song, if she was alive in this era. Century. Time... whatever. But then again, that was the 51st century. Everyone was open to everything. He walked into his office, turning his com on so Ianto could page him if he needed something; but also to partly bug the young man and make sure he showed Liz the right stuff. Like Janet. And the shooting range. Jack thought about the range. Lizzie had said she'd never fired a gun. Pity. He smiled to himself. He'd just have to give her private lessons.[/blockquote]
